What is it?
Gandhi Jayanti is a national festival celebrated in India to mark the occasion of the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the “Father of the Nation”. It is one of three national holidays in the country. It is celebrated with reverence all over the country.
Gandhi was born on 2nd October 1869 in Gujarat. He was a lawyer by profession but he abandoned his career in favour of India’s freedom struggle. Gandhi was a preacher of truth and non violence. He started the ‘Satyagraha’ movement for the Indian freedom struggle and proved to the world that freedom struggle and proved that freedom is achievable through the path of non violence. India gained independence from the British Empire in 1947.
How is it celebrated?
The president and prime minister , along with eminent political leaders pay homage at the Raj Ghat – the samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi. There are many functions organised to commemorate the occasion. People remember Gandhi and his deeds.
In 2016 India will ratify its UN Climate change commitments as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi’s life which left the least carbon footprint on earth.
