Who was he?
Maharana Pratap was a Hindu Rajput King of Mewar in Rajasthan, India. He belonged to the Sisodiya clan of Rajputs. He is revered and worshipped by many Royal families in Rajasthan for his bravery and courage. In the Juliam calendar he was born on 9thMay 1540 and in the Gregorian calendar he was born on 19th May 1540.
How is it celebrated?
It is celebrated as per the Hindu calendar (3rd day of Jyestha Shukla phase) which falls on 7th June in 2016. It is a full fledged festival. Special pujas and processions are held in his remembrance on this day everywhere but mainly limited to the regions of Rajasthan. Several cultural programs, including debates, are also organised and schools have students perform at various events. Many royal families worship him like a god as a symbol of bravery and passion. Clothes and money and distributed amongst the poor on this day.
What is it?
Maharana Pratrap is best known for the Battle of Halgighati against the Mughal Emperor Akbar to defend his kingdom. It is a historic battle that this remembered today. The battle lasted for 4 hours and Maharana Pratap was highly outnumbered and in th end had to escape; but not until the warrior had fought with great courage and killed many in the battlefield. He has gained respect and honour as he is seen as the epitome of valor, heroism, pride, patriotism and spirit of independence.
